Focus on One Thing at a Time

We live in a world that glorifies "multitasking". I'm pretty sure I even added that buzzword to my resume at one point in time. Getting a bunch of stuff done at the same time sounds great, but is it really? I'd argue that when we multitask, we sell ourselves short. We don't actually do anything well because we're trying to do everything. But when we focus on ONE THING (or person) at a time and give them our undivided attention, we will produce much better work and foster much better relationships.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PHONE

I've struggled the last few years with an unhealthy addiction to my phone. It is SO much easier to scroll through social media than to focus on an important project or the task at hand. Most people (myself included) find themselves compulsively checking their phones constantly throughout the day. You do NOT need to have your phone in your pocket or your hand 100% of the time. Our phones can be an AMAZING productivity tool, but they can also kill our productivity and take over our lives. I definitely have a long way to go, but here are a few tricks I've learned that help me maintain a healthy relationship with my phone:

  • If you need to focus on a task or project, put your phone somewhere out of reach. Out of sight - out of mind!

  • Disable ALL notifications in your phone’s notification settings OR put your phone on “Do not disturb” so that you don't hear the notifications.

  • Log out of social media apps (or delete them) if you are spending too much time scrolling.

  • Time-block your social media time.

  • Get out of the habit of being on your phone right before bed AND as soon as you wake up in the morning. Be technology-free the first and last 30 minutes of your day.

  • Avoid sleeping with your phone right next to your head - plug it in on the opposite side of the room or in another room (this will also help you avoid snoozing your alarm).

  • Take back the control over your phone!

BLUEST WATER I'VE EVER SEEN

2 weekends ago, I spent a few days in Leavenworth and went on one of my favorite hikes ever. It just so happened to be my 5th day in a row going on a hike after my Olympic Peninsula Road Trip. This particular hike was to Colchuck Lake, and it was some of the bluest water I've ever seen. I'm looking for hike recommendations if you know of any good ones around the Pacific Northwest!
